Participant profile

This program is designed for current Board Chairs or Directors of not-for-profit organisations or social enterprises. Whilst the topics covered may be of most value to those in the earlier stages of their tenure as Board Directors or those from non-commercial backgrounds, we also welcome more experienced Board Directors seeking the chance to reflect and ‘refresh’.

Organisations are welcome to send all Board Directors to the program together, if useful to do so.

Given there is some overlap in content across programs, it is recommended that leaders pick only one program to join (whichever best suits your current role). Past participants are welcome to attend Mission Delivery again this year, but please note that much of the content covered will be the same as that covered in previous years.

What you get as a participant

1

Two standalone half days of virtual program facilitated by experienced McKinsey faculty (it is not necessary to attend ‘Building the Conditions for Success’ to attend ‘Shaping the Organisation and System’)

2

Take-home tools and resources relevant to each concept covered, that you can use with your Board and organisation

3

A network of other Directors in the not-for-profit world for leaders to connect with outside the program and opportunities to hear about research and events

What the program looks like

Building the conditions for success (1 day)

Set the foundation – role of the board: Consider the Board’s role within an organisation, how it may differ from for-profit organisations, and how it may change based on context and the organisation’s needs

Foster innovation & learning – psychological safety: Understand how the Board can establish conditions that allow for psychological safety and diversity of thought

Shaping the organisation and system (1 day)

Broaden scope - shaping purpose & strategy: Understand your Board’s involvement with strategy, and how to identify and overcome factors that can inhibit a Board’s ability to effectively shape strategy

Measure and improve – impact measurement & data: Connect your organisation’s aspirations to tangible impacts on the ground, and explore how effective impact tracking can encourage operational excellence and accountability
